Waterloo Fire Station is a proud accomplishment for the Howard County Departments of Public Works and Fire & Rescue Services, the project team, and the community.
This facility achieved significant reductions in energy and water demand for municipal operations. The design demonstrates over 50% energy cost savings through strategies such as ground-source heat pumps, enthalpy wheel energy recovery, an improved building envelope, reduced interior lighting power, and a 54 kW rooftop solar PV array. Low-flow plumbing fixture selections demonstrate a 45% reduction in indoor water use. Native and drought-tolerant plant selections eliminate the need for permanent irrigation.
To maintain occupant health and safety, the building is designed and constructed with low-emitting materials, MERV 13 filters, permanent entryway systems, hazardous space separation, and CO2 sensors in densely occupied spaces. The contractor implemented an IAQ management plan that was enforced throughout construction with all personnel on site, and conducted IAQ testing at the end of construction to verify that the space was safe for occupants.
