Healthy Economy Commitment

Healthy Economy Commitment

For more than a quarter of a century, the USGBC community has championed transformative change in sustainability and the building industry. Now, to create a healthy, more equitable and greener future for all, we are turning to our elected leaders to ensure they are taking the necessary steps.

In the weeks, months and years ahead, we are committed to building a better future for all. A future where our buildings, cities and communities are part of reducing our contribution to climate change; supporting health and wellness; protecting and restoring our water resources; enhancing biodiversity and wellness by connecting people to nature; integrating nature with neighborhoods to improve connectedness and quality of life; promoting sustainable and regenerative materials cycles; and building greener economies, with an opportunity for everyone to thrive.

to join other leaders in the green building community.

In their words

"Today's global economy is rapidly evolving. Gone are the days where businesses are valued only on their economic performance. Positive environmental and social impact are now just as important as profit. At Verdical Group, we're harnessing the power of business to compete with the market to do the most good. We're proud to join USGBC in our ongoing commitment to building a healthy economy that works for all people."
- Drew Shula, Founder & CEO, Verdical Group

“As proud members and partners of the U.S. Green Building Council, and as an ENR Top Green 100 contractor, we believe that healthy people in healthy places equals a healthy economy. Miron is committed to building a better future for all, where the built environment is a practical and affordable solution that supports the health and wellness of people and the environment; one which builds a greener economy. We have first-hand experience in seeing how 3rd party certified green buildings enhance the health of occupants, positively influence our communities and boost the bottom line for organizations. The priorities outlined in USGBC’s Healthy Economy Commitment provides a framework for how policy at every level should evolve to reflect those values. We are fortunate to have private clients who see these values, but now more than ever we need action from our elected officials to help drive investment in clean energy, technologies, and a sustainably built environment through updated tax incentives, job creation and policy to ensure that all communities benefit from Federal funding for construction and renovation that prioritizes health, and include training and apprenticeship programs to create opportunities for everyone. We need buildings that create healthy, safe, resilient, efficient, green places to learn, live, work and play, while creating jobs across the country because every person deserves a healthy, sustainable, resilient and equitable future.”
– Theresa Lehman, director of sustainable services, Miron Construction Co., Inc.

"Businesses and individuals have a moral obligation to proactively participate in crafting solutions to a healthier world.  Savvy business leaders recognize that our economic vitality is deeply tied to sustaining both environmental and human health. As underscored by Guy McPherson, 'If you really think that the environment is less important than the economy, try holding your breath while you count your money.'  The priorities outlined in USGBC's Healthy Economy Commitment provide a framework for how policy at every level should evolve to reflect those important values."
– Jonathan Burgess, President, Spinnaker Group

"As a proud LEED user/ USGBC member, I know that incorporating greener buildings into our cities, communities and neighborhoods is absolutely essential in ensuring a better future for our planet and all living beings. The priorities outlined in USGBC's Healthy Economy Commitment, provide a foundation for safely adapting to rapidly changing conditions and co-creating a climate-resilient future. The values stated in this commitment advocate for policy change that will provide action at the scale and speed that meets the urgency of the economic, climate and ecological crisis."
– Arielle Lopez, sustainability consultant
