The lessons in this module reference the Arc platform for building performance management. Arc is currently undergoing some updates to improve its functionality and user experience. Please see the Arc resource page for more details on the update.
Use data to determine a building's sustainability performance. Students explore the different aspects of building performance (energy, water, waste, transportation, and occupant satisfaction) using the . Using the platform, students will work to understand how the Arc categories relate to sustainability, what data can be tracked to represent performance for each category, and how a high performing school will differ from an average performing school.
No matter what grade level you teach, these lessons explore the use of data in determining a building's sustainability performance. Each lesson explores a different category of building performance (energy, water, waste, transportation, and occupant satisfaction) using the . Students use the platform to explore how the categories relate to sustainability, what data can be tracked to represent performance for each category, and how a high performing school will differ from an average performing school.
In the lessons, students use their own or shared device to navigate the Arc Digital Playground. There is no login required for the Playground and students can manipulate the data within the platform without permanently editing the data. Lessons can also be modified so that the teacher displays the Playground for all students to see and follow along.
These lessons can be used to envision how the Building Learners program may be implemented in your classroom. We suggest for anyone interested in Building Learners review these lessons to envision using school sustainability data with your students.

The Intro to Benchmarking lessons - two each for lower elementary, upper elementary, and middle school, and three for high school - are designed to help your students understand the science behind buildings, while exploring sustainability concepts and actions to improve the ongoing operations of the school itself.
These lessons will help you find answers to these questions in the building where you work, and where your students learn and play.
The Intro to Benchmarking lessons are part of the Building Learners Program. The lessons will ease both you and your students into the topic of green building science by introducing key vocabulary and concepts through a case study of the Boston Latin School (BLS), the oldest yet greenest school within Boston Public Schools. This case study provides a foundation that will allow you and your students to discuss green building science with each other and explore elements of your own school building. The lessons introduce models and best practices for using data to improve a school's "sustainability performance" related to energy, waste, water, transportation, indoor air quality and occupant comfort.
These lessons were developed by Green Schools National Network (GSNN) for USGBC as an exemplar of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-aligned instruction.

By using the building as a laboratory for STEM learning, students are empowered to propose data-driven solutions for healthier, more efficient school environments.
For teachers looking to help students master STEM concepts, the Building Learners program is a complete, data-driven package that uses your school's eco footprint to bring lessons to life. Students sharpen their analysis and problem solving skills, and observe the benefits of their impact on their school's sustainability performance.
Building Learners empowers students to use their building as a learning laboratory. Students collect, analyze and conduct real-world investigations that inform improvements around waste, energy, water, health and transportation at their school. Working with their school's facility manager and other school staff, students gain exposure to sustainability careers and build positive relationships with their community.
The Building Learners program teaches students about sustainability through your school building operations.
